Bubblers are the one most people underestimate. On a tanning ledge they turn a shallow shelf into the part of the pool small children actually stay in, which changes how the whole family uses it.
Tanning Ledges, Baja Shelves and Sun Shelves
These are three names for the same thing: a shallow platform, usually six to twelve inches deep, at one end of the pool. Builders in different parts of the country use different words for it, which is why you will see all three. It is the single most requested feature we get asked about, and it is the one that changes daily use the most.
A shelf gives you somewhere to sit in water without swimming, somewhere a toddler can be in the pool safely under supervision, and somewhere to put a lounger. Add bubblers and it becomes the part of the pool that gets used on days nobody intends to swim.
In-Pool Features Worth Deciding Early
- Tanning ledges, also called baja shelves or sun shelves, ideally with bubblers roughed in
- Benches and swim-outs, which decide where people sit
- A spillover spa, or the plumbing for one, even if the spa comes later

The economics matter here. Adding features during a resurfacing or a tile replacement costs a fraction of doing it as a standalone job later, because most of the cost is access rather than the feature itself.
