Fire is the thing that keeps a backyard in use after the sun goes down. Water goes quiet in the evening. Fire does the opposite, and a pool with fire on its edge reads completely differently at nine at night than it does at noon.

The Types of Pool Fire Feature
- Fire bowls. The most common by a distance. Raised bowls set on columns, on a raised wall or on the pool edge, usually in pairs or fours for symmetry. Clean shape, strong evening presence, and the easiest to add to a design without changing anything else.
- Fire and water bowls. The same bowl with a scupper, so water spills from the bowl into the pool while the flame burns above it. Fire and water in the same object is the effect people remember, and it is the most photographed feature on most of the pools that have one.
- Linear fire features. A long trough rather than a bowl, usually set into a raised wall or a seat wall. More architectural, more contemporary, and better suited to a pool with straight lines than to a freeform one.
- Raised fire elements. Fire built into a structure that is already part of the design, such as a raised bond beam or a column, rather than sitting as a separate object.
Which one suits a pool is mostly decided by the pool’s geometry and by where people sit. A bowl reads best when there is a sightline to it from the house or the seating. A linear feature reads best along an edge you look across.
Fuel, Ignition and How They Actually Run
Fuel
Fire features run on natural gas or propane. If the house is already on natural gas, the job is running a line to the feature and sizing it for the demand. If it is not, the feature runs on propane from a tank, which means somewhere to put the tank and somewhere to refill it from. Neither is a problem and they are different jobs at different costs, so it is worth establishing on the first visit rather than at the quote.Â
Ignition
There are broadly three levels, and the difference between them shows up every evening rather than once at installation.
- Match-lit. You open a valve and light it. Cheapest, entirely reliable, and it means walking out to the feature with a lighter every time.
- Electronic ignition. A push button or switch lights it. More components, more cost, and it is the level at which people actually use the feature on a weeknight rather than only when guests come.
- Automation controlled. The feature is a circuit on the pool controller, so it lights from the app alongside the lights, the heater and the water features. If you are already considering pool automation, adding the fire feature as a circuit at the same time costs far less than adding it later.
The honest advice, which we will give you in person as well: the ignition level matters more to your enjoyment than the shape of the bowl does. A beautiful feature you have to go outside and light with a match gets used a handful of times a year.
Safety and Living With a Fire Feature
A pool fire feature is a gas appliance in a wet outdoor environment, and the things that make it safe are decided at design rather than added afterwards.
- Placement and clearance. Distance from anything combustible, from seating, and from where people climb out of the pool. A bowl on a column at the far end of the pool is a different safety proposition from one on a seat wall people lean against.
- Gas supply and shutoff. The line has to be sized for the appliance and there has to be an accessible shutoff.
- Wind. This is the practical one nobody mentions. An exposed flame in North Texas wind behaves differently from one in a sheltered corner, and placement takes prevailing wind into account rather than only the view.
- Children and the pool edge. A feature within reach of the pool coping is different from one that is not, and this is a design conversation to have honestly rather than a warning to bury in a manual.
- Materials and heat. The surfaces immediately around a fire feature run hot, which affects the coping and deck material chosen underneath and around it. This is planned alongside the pool coping and the pool decking rather than after them.
The result is a well-balanced outdoor environment where fire features not only elevate aesthetics but also add warmth, functionality, and a more immersive experience to your backyard.
What Pool Fire Features Cost
Fire features are priced per feature rather than as one number, and three things drive the figure: how many, what they are made of, and how they are lit.
- A single fire bowl, match-lit, on a new build where the gas line is already being run
- A pair of fire and water bowls with electronic ignition
- A linear fire feature built into a raised wall
- Running a new gas line, or a propane tank and supply where there is no natural gas
- Adding fire features to an existing pool rather than during a build, and this is usually the larger difference, because the deck and the gas run are already in place
The cheapest time to add fire is during the build, while the deck is open and the gas run is being planned anyway. That is not a sales line, it is the reason this page sits inside the new pool construction section.

Adding Fire Features to an Existing Pool
It can be done and it is done often. What decides the cost is not the bowl, it is what has to be opened up to get gas and, if you want it, power to where the feature will sit.
If the deck is being taken up anyway, the timing is ideal. Homeowners planning pool deck resurfacing, pool coping replacement or a wider pool remodel should decide about fire before that work starts rather than after it, because the same trench costs almost nothing while the deck is up and a great deal once it is back down.

Designing Fire Into the Pool Rather Than Onto It
The difference between a fire feature that looks built in and one that looks bought is almost entirely placement and proportion.
- Sightline. A feature you cannot see from the kitchen window or the seating area is a feature nobody remembers to light.
- Symmetry and count. Bowls read best in pairs or fours on a formal pool and can read better as a single element on a freeform one. Four small bowls and two large ones are different designs, not different budgets for the same design.
- Height. A bowl at coping height reads as part of the pool. The same bowl on a column reads as an object in the garden. Both are valid and they are not interchangeable.
- Reflection. Fire near water is worth twice as much as fire away from it, because the flame appears twice. Positioning for the reflection is the single cheapest way to make a feature look more expensive than it was.
