Something Stopped Working?

Most people reading this page are not planning anything. Something has failed, and they are trying to work out how bad it is before they call somebody. So here is the short version for the four things that actually break.

The heater has stopped heating

The most common equipment failure and usually not the most expensive one. Ignition faults, pressure switches, flow problems and blocked exchangers are all repairs rather than replacements. A heater that is genuinely finished usually announces itself with corrosion rather than an error code. We will tell you which one you have before quoting a new unit.

The pump is noisy, or has stopped

A pump that has become loud is usually bearings, and bearings are a warning rather than an emergency. A pump that has stopped may be the motor, the capacitor or the impeller, and only one of those three is expensive. On an older single-speed pump it is worth asking whether repairing it is throwing money at something you would replace within two years anyway.

The filter pressure is wrong

High pressure usually means the filter needs cleaning rather than replacing. Low pressure usually means something before the filter, which is a suction-side problem rather than a filter problem. Both are cheap to diagnose and expensive to guess at.

The salt system says the cell is bad

Sometimes it is, and often it just needs cleaning. Those two look identical from the control panel and only one of them costs money. Covered in more detail on our saltwater conversion page.

Repair or Replace?

Not everything needs replacing. A failed capacitor, a worn seal or a cracked union is a repair, and telling you that is cheaper for us in the short term and better for both of us in the long term.

Replacement is usually the right answer when the unit is old enough that parts are getting hard to find, when the repair cost is approaching a meaningful share of a new unit, or when the existing equipment is a single-speed pump, because in that case the energy saving alone changes the arithmetic. We will tell you which situation you are in before you commit to anything.

Upgrading During a Remodel

If a remodel is on the horizon, do the equipment at the same time. The pad is already being worked on, the access is already there, and the labour is already on site. Doing it separately later costs meaningfully more for exactly the same result.

The same applies in reverse for a new build. Equipment specified at design stage is sized to the pool from the start, which is cheaper than correcting it in year three.

How long does a pump replacement take?

Usually a few hours, depending on how the existing system is plumbed and whether the new unit needs different connections.

Will a variable-speed pump actually save money?

Yes, and it is normally the clearest saving available on a pool. A single-speed pump runs flat out whenever it runs. A variable-speed unit spends most of its time at low speed, which uses a fraction of the power and is also considerably quieter.

Do I have to replace everything at once?

No. We will tell you what is limiting performance now and what can wait. Replacing the pump alone is often the right first step.
