Build a Strong, Functional Foundation for Outdoor Living

Custom Deck Builders in Dallas and Fort Worth

A deck earns its place by changing how much of the yard you actually use. Most backyards have a good spot that nobody sits in because the ground is uneven, the slope is wrong, or there is nowhere flat to put a table.

Clear Blue Pools & Backyards builds custom decks across Dallas, Fort Worth and the surrounding communities, designed around the pool, the patio and the way the space is used rather than as a structure standing on its own.

Made for Daily Living, Not Just Looks

A Custom Deck Is Not a Pool Deck

Worth clearing up first, because the same word covers two different things and people arrive here looking for either.

  • A custom deck, on this page, is a built structure with a frame and a walking surface, either raised above the ground or sitting close to it. Timber or composite.
  • A pool deck is the hard surface immediately around a pool, usually concrete, pavers or stone. If that is what you are after, it is covered on our pool decking page for new pools, and pool deck resurfacing if you have one that has seen better days.

The two often meet. A raised deck that steps down to a pool deck is a common and good arrangement, and it is worth designing as one thing rather than two.

Ground Level or Raised?

These are different builds with different costs, and the decision is usually made by the ground rather than by preference.

Ground level
Sits low, needs less structure underneath, and generally does not require guardrails. Cheaper and quicker. Best where the ground is reasonably flat already and where you want the deck to read as part of the yard rather than as a platform above it.

Raised
Structural posts, beams and framing, usually guardrails and steps, and often a permit. This is what you build when the ground falls away, when the deck comes off a door that sits well above grade, or when you want the space underneath. Costs more and it is the option that solves problems a patio cannot.

Materials, and What They Are Like to Own

At Clear Blue Pools And Backyards, we take a system-based approach to ensure everything works together.

Our services include:

  • Pressure-treated pine. The standard structural material and the cheapest surface. It moves, it needs sealing periodically, and in this climate it will check and gray if it is left alone. Perfectly good if you are prepared to maintain it, and a poor choice if you are not.
  • Cedar or hardwood. Better looking, more dimensionally stable, more expensive, and still a material that wants attention.
  • Composite. Costs more up front and asks almost nothing of you afterwards, which is usually the actual decision. Worth knowing that composite gets noticeably hotter than timber in direct sun, which in a Texas July matters, and that boards vary considerably between brands.

The framing underneath is the part nobody asks about and the part that decides how long the deck lasts. Whatever the surface, the structure below it is doing the work.

Designing the Deck Around the Rest of the Yard

A deck that was designed on its own tends to look like it was added later, because it was. The things worth deciding at the same time:

Luxury pool with sunken fire pit lounge, swim-up table, and waterfall
Geometric pool with raised square spa, sun shelf, and in-pool ledge loungers

At Clear Blue Pools And Backyards, we shape each layout to match your backyard and daily use.

  • Where it meets the house, and whether the door it serves is the door people actually use.
  • How it steps down to the pool or the patio, and whether that transition is a step, a landing or a change of material.
  • Whether it carries an outdoor kitchen or seating, which changes the framing and the loading underneath it before anything is built.
  • Shade. A deck in full sun in July is a deck nobody sits on, which is the same point made on every outdoor page and is truer here than most. A pergola or shade structure over part of it is usually the difference between a deck used twice a summer and one used every week.
  • Lighting and power, which want to be run while the framing is open rather than afterwards.
  • Where it meets planting and landscaping or hardscaping, because the edge is what makes it look designed.

The wider picture is on our outdoor living page, and if there is a pool involved it is usually cheaper to plan all of it together than to do it in stages.

Materials Built for Strength and Longevity

Decks are exposed to constant use, changing weather, and heavy loads, so material selection is key to long-term performance. The right choices ensure your deck remains stable, safe, and visually consistent over time.

At Clear Blue Pools And Backyards, we focus on materials that balance durability with a clean finish.

Our material selection includes:

The result is a deck that stays strong, comfortable, and reliable through everyday use.

I reached out to Clear Blue after getting recommendations from a few people, and I'm glad I did. The whole experience felt very professional without ever feeling pushy. They took the time to understand what I needed and explained everything clearly. It's rare to find a company that values customer relationships as much as the quality of their work.

It’s stressful trusting a pool company and feel confident in the work and results. Customer care is important and guarantees as well. I felt this confidence when hiring clear blue pools and backyards. The pool came out beautiful and exactly how my wife envisioned. Throughout the process we felt comfortable and heard. I would recommend their service to our friends and family.

Frequently Asked Questions

A custom deck is a built structure with a frame and a timber or composite surface, either raised or close to the ground. A pool deck is the hard surface around a pool, normally concrete, pavers or stone. People use the word deck for both, and they are different jobs. Our pool decking and pool deck resurfacing pages cover the second one.
The ground usually decides. If the yard is reasonably flat and the door sits close to grade, a ground level deck is cheaper, quicker and generally needs no guardrails. If the ground falls away or the door sits well above it, a raised deck with proper structure, rails and steps is the answer, and it usually needs a permit.
Wood costs less up front and asks for maintenance. Composite costs more and asks for very little. The trade most people do not hear about is heat: composite runs noticeably hotter than timber in direct sun, which in a Texas summer affects whether the deck gets used barefoot. Neither is the right answer for everyone.
VERIFY: confirm before publishing. Requirements are set by the municipality and vary across the area, and raised structures above a certain height generally do require permitting and inspection.
Yes, and it is a common arrangement, particularly where the ground falls away on one side of the pool. What has to be planned is the transition between the raised structure and the pool deck surface, and how close any structure sits to the water.
It can, and it has to be designed for it from the start. Both are heavy and concentrated loads, and adding framing later means going underneath a finished deck, which is considerably more expensive than allowing for it at the design stage.
VERIFY: duration to be confirmed by the client. The current site states one to two weeks, which is one of seventeen different durations published across the site.
VERIFY: cost ranges held pending client confirmation. Decks are priced by the square foot, and height and material move the figure more than anything else.

Tell us where the deck would go and how far the ground drops away across that spot. Those two answers decide whether this is a straightforward ground level build or a structural one, which is most of the cost difference.
