How Hot Does It Get? The Question That Decides Everything Else
In most of the country this is a footnote. Here it is the first thing to settle, because a deck that cannot be crossed barefoot in July is a deck people run across rather than sit on, and that is four months of the year.
Three things drive surface temperature and they are all decided at specification.
- Color. Light surfaces run meaningfully cooler than dark ones in direct sun, and this matters more than the material it is made from. A pale concrete deck will be more comfortable than a dark stone one.
- Material and density. Dense materials absorb and hold heat. Porous and textured ones shed it faster and dry faster after someone climbs out.
- Shade. The cheapest way to fix a hot deck is to not have it in full sun. A shade structure or pergola over the seating side does more for comfort than any material upgrade, and it costs less than redoing the deck.

Concrete is one of the most practical pool deck choices for Fort Worth homes because it can be shaped around the pool, finished for better traction, and integrated with coping, drainage, walkways, and outdoor-living areas. A durable installation begins with site preparation and grading, followed by a compacted base, planned reinforcement and control joints, and a consistent slope that directs water away from the pool and nearby structures.

Where the Deck Meets Everything Else
A pool deck fails at its edges rather than in the middle, so these are worth getting right.
- The coping joint. Where the deck meets the pool coping there is an expansion joint, and it has to be able to move, because a slab in this part of Texas expands in July and contracts in January. This is the single most common point of failure on a pool deck and it is a detailing decision rather than a materials one.
- Drainage and fall. Water runs away from the pool rather than into it, and it has to go somewhere. On a flat lot that means deck drains, and where they go is decided before the pour.
- The house. Where the deck meets a patio or a covered outdoor living area, a change of material reads as intentional and a bad match reads as a repair.
- Conduit. Anything electrical that will ever cross the deck, including pool lighting and gas for a fire feature, should be run before the deck goes down. Afterwards it means cutting.
- The soft edge. Where the deck meets landscaping and hardscaping, the transition is what makes a backyard look designed rather than assembled.
New Deck, or a Deck That Needs Repairing?
Two different jobs, and worth being clear about because they get confused.

If you already have a deck and it is cracked, stained, flaking or simply too hot, that is pool deck resurfacing, which is a different process and usually a considerably smaller cost than replacement.
We would rather resurface a sound deck than replace it, and we will tell you which one you have. If the slab underneath is structurally sound, resurfacing is almost always the better answer.

Color matters more than material. A pale surface will run cooler in direct sun than a dark one of the same material, which is the first thing to decide. Beyond that, porous and textured surfaces shed heat faster than dense ones, travertine is known for staying comparatively cool, and cool decking coatings exist specifically for this problem. The cheapest fix of all is shade over the side people sit on.
Pavers handle ground movement better because the joints absorb it, and a damaged unit can be lifted and replaced on its own. Concrete gives a continuous surface with no joints to weed and costs less, and it can be resurfaced or coated later. In an area with expansive soil the movement argument for pavers is a real one rather than a sales point.
Usually because a slab moves and the joints did not let it. Soil in this part of Texas expands and contracts significantly with moisture, and control joints and the expansion joint at the coping are what accommodate that. Cracking is more often a detailing problem than a material problem.
