Attached or Freestanding

Shade structures need to perform consistently in changing outdoor conditions, from strong sunlight to moisture and temperature shifts. The right materials ensure both structural strength and a clean, lasting appearance.

Attached. Fixed to the house along one side, so it reads as an extension of the building and generally costs less because the house carries part of the structure. It has to be flashed and it is more likely to need a permit. VERIFY: confirm whether Clear Blue handles permitting.
Freestanding. Its own posts, so it can go wherever the shade is needed, which on most lots is beside the pool rather than against the house. Nothing fixed to the building, no flashing question, and usually simpler to permit.

On a pool project the freestanding version is often the better answer, because the place people want to sit is next to the water. That is also the moment to run power for lighting and fans, which is far cheaper before the roof is on.
