What a Spillover Spa Is, and What It Is Not
Worth being clear about first, because three different things get called a hot tub and they are not the same purchase.
- A spillover spa is built into the pool structure, usually raised above the waterline, with water spilling over a weir into the pool. One shell, one set of plumbing, and it reads as part of the pool rather than as an object next to it.
- An inground hot tub built separately sits at deck level, on its own, without the spillover. Same construction, different relationship to the pool.
- A portable hot tub is a factory-made shell that arrives on a truck and plugs in. Cheaper, movable, faster to install, and it never looks like part of the backyard because it is not.
The trade is honest and worth stating plainly. A portable unit costs less and can be taken with you. A built spa costs more, cannot move, holds its heat differently and is the only one of the three that becomes part of the property. How the Spa Runs, and Why It Matters More Than the Shape
Almost every complaint about a spillover spa comes down to how it is plumbed and heated rather than how it looks.
Shared or separate equipment
A spa can share the pool’s pump and heater or have its own. Sharing costs less to build and means the spa and pool are on the same system, with valves switching between them. A dedicated spa heater costs more up front and heats a small body of water quickly without touching the pool. VERIFY: confirm which Clear Blue builds as standard and what the upgrade is.
Heat-up time
The number everybody wants and nobody publishes. It depends on the spa’s volume, the heater’s output and the starting temperature, and there is a real answer for a typical build. Jets and the blower
Jet count and placement are a design decision, not a fixed number, and more jets is not automatically better because output is shared across them. VERIFY: typical count and whether it is configurable.
The spillover itself
The weir edge is the visible feature and it is also the thing that has to be built dead level, because a spillover that is a fraction out runs to one side and never stops looking wrong. This is one of the few details on a pool where the tolerance is genuinely tight.

Design Decisions Made Before Anything Is Poured
- Height above the pool. A higher spa gives a longer, more visible spill and a taller wall to climb over. A lower one integrates more quietly and is easier to get in and out of. This is a comfort decision as much as an aesthetic one.
- Position relative to the house. A spa is used in cold weather more than the pool is, which means the walk from the door matters in a way it does not in July.
- Seating. Bench depth and the number of seats decide who the spa is for. Four adults and two adults are different builds.
- The spill edge finish. This is the surface the water runs over and the one people look at, which is why the tile and coping specification matters more on a spa than anywhere else on the pool.
- Lighting. A spa is used after dark far more than the pool is, so it should be lit deliberately rather than left to spill from the pool. Covered on our pool lighting page.
Fire is also worth deciding at the same time, because a spa is a winter feature and so is a fire feature. The two are used on the same evenings and they are cheapest to build together.
What a Spillover Spa Costs
A spa is priced as an addition to the pool rather than as a separate project, and the figure is driven by three things: the size and seat count, whether the equipment is shared or dedicated, and the finish specification on the spill edge.

Running cost is a separate question and a fair one. A spa is a small volume of water held at a high temperature, and how much that costs depends on the heater, the cover and how often it is used. We will give you a straight answer rather than avoiding the question.
